چکیده

In this paper we report on first results obtained using polycrystalline CVD diamond detectors irradiated with heavily ionizing particles at GSI. At the UNILAC accelerator, ions with energies near the Bragg-Peak have been stopped inside the material whereas at the heavy-ion therapy facility of GSI these detectors are operated in transmission mode and have been studied in a carbon beam from SIS with energies ranging from 80 to 430 MeV/u. In both energy regimes high-bandwidth electronics have been used to count the number of impinging particles. Furthermore, the thermoluminescence (TL) response of synthetic-diamond dosimeters to heavily ionizing particles has been studied.

Dosimetric characteristics of active solid state detectors in a 60 MeV proton radiotherapy beam

The solid state active detectors, widely used for conventional radiotherapy, such as diamond detectors (DD) and diodes may be attractive tools also in dosimetry of therapeutic proton beams. Diodes are broadly applied in oncology clinics and routinely used for in-vivo dosimetry [1, 8]. These real-time detectors are rugged, relatively inexpensive and provide on-line readings, what allows for quic...

Medical physics aspects of particle therapy.

Charged particle beams offer an improved dose conformation to the target volume when compared with photon radiotherapy, with better sparing of normal tissue structures close to the target. In addition, beams of heavier ions exhibit a strong increase of the linear energy transfer in the Bragg peak when compared with the entrance region. These physical and biological properties make ion beams mor...

Dosimetric characterization of CVD diamonds in photon, electron and proton beams

Synthetic diamond is potentially one of the more interesting materials in the field of detectors applicable in dosimetry. It is, in fact, tissue equivalent (its atomic number, Z = 6, is very close to the actual atomic number of a biological tissue, Z = 7.5. Moreover it is not toxic and shows a high resistance to radiation damage, a high sensitivity and stability of response, a low leakage curre...

Radiobiological Research with Charged Particles Beams in Itep

Radiobiological researches with heavy ions have been started at ITEP in 2006 on unique heavy ion accelerating facility ITEP-TWAC. The main purpose of these researches is study of the biological efficiency of carbon ions for different types of biological objects, such as tumor and normal cells, in the framework of the development of heavy ion therapy for cancer treatment in Russia. Another possi...

An irradiation facility with a horizontal beam for radiobiological studies.

A facility with a horizontal beam for radiobiological experiments with heavy ions has been designed and constructed at the Heavy Ion Laboratory in Warsaw University. The facility is optimal to investigate the radiobiological effects of charged heavy particles on a cellular or molecular level as in the region of the Bragg peak.
